Tips for Better Dental Health

Brushing
Believe it or not, there is a proper way to brush. Many of us rush through brushing or press too hard. Irritated and damaged gums can be the result. If you think you might need a refresher course in brushing techniques, please ask your hygienist!

Flossing
Daily flossing can help to prevent gum disease. Like with brushing, there is a proper technique to ensure best results. There is a tendency to "saw" the floss back and forth but this can irritate tender gum tissue. Down and up is the best method. For a review of good flossing techniques, and a recommendation for the best type of floss, please talk with your hygienist.

Mouth Wash
No one wants bad breath but not all mouthwashes are the same. Some are designed to reduce plaque build-up while others are formulated to kill germs that lead to bad breath. No matter which brand you choose, it's important to read the ingredient label. Products with alcohol can cause damage to your gum tissue and are best avoided or diluted. Remember, no swallowing!

Prescriptions and Dental Health
It is important to inform your hygienist if there are any changes in your medical condition. Certain prescriptions affect your teeth and gums. If we know, we can help you take the necessary steps to protect your teeth while you are on the medication.

There are also certain conditions that require antibiotic prophylaxis. We want to help you improve your overall wellness, so please discuss these conditions with your hygienist or Dr. Cloutier.
